Front view of damaged Buick Angle view of damaged Buick

While driving by Allan Park (corner of 2nd SDR Conc and Allan Park Rd in West Grey, Ontario), a van pulled out without looking in front of Karl as he was approaching the intersection. This caused an accident sending him (he was alone in the car) through a fence and down a fifteen to twenty foot drop off.

Fortunately, Karl was going well below the posted speed limit and didn’t injure the driver of the van (who was ticketed for failing to yield) or the young passenger in the front seat.

Soon after visiting the emergency room, Karl was released with orders to “take it easy”. He received a mild concussion and injuries to his neck when his head hit the steering wheel… other than that his chest hurts a little bit from the seat belt restraining him, and his knees are aching, we assume from the dashboard.

The accident could have been much worse. We are so glad that Karl is going to be all right and that we had a spare vehicle to use as backup transportation. We have so much to be thankful for!

After a long day on Friday packing up our remaining stuff into boxes, loading two trucks and trailers, cleaning our apartment, and then finally handing in our keys we were ready to go. On Saturday we made the drive to Durham, Ontario with the help of Mom and Dad Haynes. We have unloaded all of our stuff and are now settling into our new home.

Thank you so much for all your prayers as we made this move!

As we posted previously, my brother and I decided to test out the motorized skateboard. Due to popular demand, I put two clips together, edited with iMovie and posted it to YouTube.

Our trip to Washington was a relaxing time of fellowship with my brother’s family, as well as a good time to share about our vision as missionaries with New Tribes Mission. We were able to see the dual nature of the state (arid vs. forest) as well as the culture of the various areas…

Getting back home was the craziest and started out at 5:00AM PST. The first part of the adventure, from Washington to Minnesota was the most normal part of it all. Minnesota to Chicago… easy as well. However, once we landed in Chicago things got exciting.

alero-engine alero

A week ago today we went out in the rain to visit family. At that time Michigan was being dumped on from the left overs of hurricane Ike. It had poured down hard for the third day in a row but we decided to brave the water and go out anyway. Karl drove the car through lots of puddles but the last one was memorable because, to our surprise, the water came up over the hood of the car! To make a long story short, our Alero spent the week in the shop and finally came home on Friday afternoon. We’re just glad to have our car back!

2000alero

Our 2000 Alero has been feeling a little under the weather the last few weeks. Two weeks ago we discovered that our small oil leak had turned into a very big oil leak. It got so bad, that by the time we took it to the shop it was leaking a quart a day! The night before we took it in, our abs (anti-lock break system) started freaking out. We knew that would need fixed but decided to focus on the oil leak first.

So, I took the car in and picked it up two days later only to find another problem. Our serpentine belt was squealing really bad. As it turns out, they should have included that when they replaced the timing gasket. So I took it back and payed a bit more to have it replaced. But, that wasn’t the end of it. I also noticed our car had come down with a new illness. There was a loud rattling sound coming from the engine. It was so bad it sounded like a diesel! I took it back to the shop. They discovered there was a dent in the timing cover that was causing it to rub against the timing chain. The dent was hammered out and the rattling sound was gone. After dishing out over $700 and taking the car back twice, we were glad to have our car back and the problems solved.

There was still the abs problem that we were continually reminded of by the warning lights on the dashboard. So last week I decided to take the car to the dealership and get it fixed. We ended up with a new wheel hub because the sensor was going bad. We spent almost another $700 for that to be replaced.

So, all that to say… our Alero seems to be driving well now. We are just hoping there will be no more large maintenance jobs needed on it for a long time. (It’s really hurting our pocket book!)
